Queen's Biomedical Innovation Team
The Queen's Biomedical Innovation Team (QBiT) is an undergraduate student-run interdisciplinary design team that focuses on biomedical device design and innovation. QBiT consists of students in all disciplines, but focuses on concepts discussed in mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering as well as life-sciences, kinesiology, and computing. The team strongly believes in education through application, and thus, focuses primarily on the design, prototyping, and testing phases of product development.
This past year, the team competed in the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) student design competition and was chosen to be a finalist out of 100+ international applicants. In the 2017-2018 school year, QBiT is continuing to work on the Diagnostic Pacifier and has started two new projects: “Walk-with Me” and a Polymeric Wound Recovery Strip. The Diagnostic Pacifier will monitor a baby’s breathing rate, temperature, and cortisol levels. Walk-with-Me is a gait-rehabilitation device for children in developing countries with cerebral palsy that will adapt to a child’s size as they grow. The Wound Recovery Strip is a biocompatible hydrogel that will provide a sustained release of chemicals to initiate a positive immune response and assist with wound healing.
The team organizes speaker seminars, design challenges, and workshops to ensure that both members and non-members of QBiT can be exposed to the biomedical industry. QBiT will also co-host the Global Biomedical Design Conference with Engineers Without Borders.
