In Memory of Andrew Calder
Passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2019 after battling cancer with grace and dignity for just under two years. Andrew is survived by his wife Susan (nee MacDonnell), three young children, Campbell, Quinn and Fiona, his parents Ken and Marg (nee Kuczma), his brother Graeme, father-in-law Phil MacDonnell and sisters and brothers-in-law, Sally and Simon Paradine and Sam and Brian Sharp.
He was an amazing Uncle and will be missed greatly by his niece and nephews Parker and Jack Calder, Chloe, Henry and George Paradine, Charlie and William Mascia and Rene and Reuben Sharp. Andrew was born April 20, 1975 and grew up as an active boy enjoying various sports and extra curricular activities in Mississauga. It was while Andrew was at Port Credit SS that he found his first love (before Susie), volleyball.
He started by playing club volleyball and some beach volleyball that eventually led to Varsity volleyball at Queen’s University where he captained the team for two years. His passion for volleyball continued well past his university days and helped to form who he became as an adult and father.
Friends were a key aspect of Andrew’s life, and he had many. He remained close friends with many of those he went to school with growing up in Mississauga, while studying at Queen’s and after University through Men’s hockey, his work, cottaging on Stony Lake, and after his children were born, through so many of their sports teams. He always made time for each of them, through their good times, and bad; it was Andrew’s kindness, intelligence and well-rounded nature that allowed him to develop and sustain all of these friendships.
After Queen’s, Andrew went on to work at Mercer, Telus and finally RBC Capital Markets, where he was a Managing Director and Head of the Credit Research team. Andrew was dedicated to his work and helping everyone on his team to succeed. His interests were broad and his constant curiosity led him to be the person that we as a family leaned on to answer all the unusual questions.
Throughout Andrew’s 44 years, he always put family first. He was a devoted Dad to his three children, coaching their sports teams, celebrating their wins, and supporting them in their losses. He was ever present to read a book, work on a puzzle, help with homework or have a good snuggle. He always had a smile especially for Fiona, Quinn and Campbell and we already see his perseverance and great sense of humour carrying on in his children. He had especially fond memories of spending time with his parents and his brother celebrating milestones with his extended family. Following his parents’ example, he was an amazing Dad and husband. Some of his happiest memories were of his family vacations as a kid with his parents and brother and carrying on that tradition later in life with Susie and their children. He loved recounting stories from these vacations and they always brought a smile to his face.
Since meeting Susie he had become a true Stony Laker and loved all the lake has to offer. He especially enjoyed his quiet time spent fishing, and revelled in the ‘not so quiet time’ patiently putting worms on hooks and fishing with his children and niece and nephews for hours at a time. He will forever be remembered as a loving husband, devoted Dad, amazing brother, wonderful son and great friend.
