Our class has established the Science '94 Legacy Fund, which provides the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science discretionary financial support for various present and future needs. One of the exciting initiatives we recently supported was the Queen’s Spatially Aware Virtual-Reality Interface Design Team; an exciting and relatively new group that has only been in existence for a year. This team is creating a haptic feedback glove to interact with Virtual Reality and robotics. Haptic or kinesthetic communication recreates the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user. With the help of funding from our Fund, the team was able to create a mechanical exoskeleton for the right hand. This exoskeleton serves as the basis to provide joint position and eventually the haptic feedback to the user. Additionally, they have managed to create a virtual hand, quite an impressive accomplishment for a small group of 20 students with one staff supervisor
Supporting new student teams that are advancing innovative technologies and offering innovative volunteer opportunities is important to ensuring that Queen’s Engineering remains one of the strongest programs in Canada. Please continue to give to our class fund, allowing us to help enhance the educational and student experience at Queen’s.
As a group, we have contributed $107,550 to the Faculty of Engineering and $204,211 to Queen’s. Our current fund balance is $7,171. Please help us raise an additional $20,000 by December 2019.
